How to pair fried food with sparkling wine

Sparkling wine and fried food – a match made in wine heaven!

Sparkling wine covers so many types: Champagne, Prosecco, Cava, Asti Spumante, Crémant, and all the sparklers made by wineries around the world. However, sparkling wine is not just for our special or fancy occasions; it can be added to almost any meal to elevate it to the next level of deliciousness. So let’s dive into the wonderfully wacky world of pairing sparkling wine with some of our favorite foods!

Lievin DeGeyndt said it best…”Champagne tends to pair with a larger variety of foods than normal wines do. It works better with everyday food like fried chicken, burgers, fries, and even Chinese takeout.” Listen to Lieven talk about Champagne, sparkling wine and all the ways to enjoy it here.

First up to your plate: fried chicken

So here is the quintessential comfort food – fried chicken! The crispy, golden goodness paired with a glass of bubbly is pure magic. And the acidity of Champagne or other sparkling wine slices through the grease of the fried chicken, leaving your palate refreshed and ready for the next crunchy bite!

Second up to your plate: french fries (chips by any other name)

As Lucia Costa says in her interview (found here), the lively bubbles of sparkling wine are a perfect complement to the crispy crunch of the fries (or chips for my friends in Ireland and the UK). In fact, Lucia says that anything fried goes with sparkling wine!

What’s on third?

And let’s not forget a wonderful snack – the Mozzarella stick. Think about the gooey, oozing goodness of fried cheese served with sparkling wine to cut the grease.

What other food can fix your bubble trouble?

Sparkling wine will make many comfort foods special, like:

  • salty snacks like popcorn and potato chips
  • grilled cheese
  • smoked salmon (actually, any salmon!)
  • anything with bacon
  • stuffed potato skins
  • cheese and crackers
  • and the list goes on… it’s totally up to you!
